When your content on the world wide web is indexed it confirms that your websites content has been crawled by Google spiders.  If Google can find your pages then so can potential visitors. It is extremely important for your website to be indexed. Only once your website has been indexed the SEO campaign will begin.

4. Websites are ranked according to relevancy

The results search engines, like Google, Bing and Yahoo, deliver are based on importance.  This means that web pages that are most relevant to your keyword search rank higher on search engine results.

5. How do search engines determine relevancy?

The relevance of a website is determined by how popular a website is.  Search engines use algorithms to help them determine the popularity of a website.

6. Shortcomings of search engines:

  • Images: Search engines cannot identify content in an image, video or audio files
  • Text: Search engines read plain text or HTML format.  Unfortunately, Java Script is unreadable by search engines.
  • Forms: Content hidden in a form will not be identified by search engines.
  • Search Terms: Use words that are in common use e.g. the term “lawyer” instead of “litigator”. Use language native to your area e.g. organise not organize.

Importance of Keywords

People searching the internet enter keywords into a search engine to get results.  This is why it is important for your website to contain the right keywords. Correct keywords will help with your Search Engine Optimisation.

1. Correct usage of keywords

  • Use relevant words in common use
  • Focus on descriptive words people use in everyday conversations
  • Using keywords throughout your text, in titles and websites.  Metadata will improve your SEO on your website.

2. Title Tags

  • A title tag is the headings people click on, to enter a website.
  • Use words that accurately describe your websites content.
  • Keep the character count below 70.  Search engines only display 70 characters in their title tags.

3. Keyword positioning

Place your keywords at the beginning of your Title tag.  This makes your website more visible to search engines and people.

4. Repeating keywords

Repeat keywords approximately 3 times within the text on your web page.  Too much content will not help achieve a better ranking.

5. Bolding keywords

Bold one keyword per web page.  It makes your website more visible to search engines.

6. Research keywords

To determine relevant keywords for a website means reaching your market.  Use keywords commonly searched for.
